Dundee Boxing Great, Dick McTaggart, Scotland's Only Boxing Olympic Gold Medallist

The motion

That the Parliament marks the death of the Dundee boxing great, Dick McTaggart, aged 89, on 9 March 2025; acknowledges that Dick was the only Scottish boxer to win an Olympic Gold medal, achieving this feat in the lightweight final at the 1956 Melbourne games, where he also received the Val Barker Trophy for best boxing style, the only British boxer to do so; understands that, across an illustrious career, Dick won 610 of 634 bouts, including Bronze at the 1960 Rome Olympics; notes that he was appointed an MBE in 1985 for services to amateur boxing in Scotland; believes that Dick was described by his family as a “true gentleman”; values his contribution of inspiring multiple generations of boxers in Dundee and Scotland, and sends condolences to his friends, family and the city of Dundee.
