Garlieston Primary School Gains Gold Award Over Children's Rights

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Garlieston Primary School on achieving the Gold Rights Respecting Award; considers this is an outstanding honour for the 16-strong pupils and the principal teacher, Caroline Howatson, who attend the primary school in rural Wigtownshire; recognises that this honour is granted by UNICEF UK to schools that have fully embedded children’s rights throughout the school in their policies, practice and ethos, as outlined in the Rights Respecting Schools Awards programme, which is based on nationally agreed standards; notes that, to achieve the Gold honour, a school has to be assessed by one of the charity’s professional advisers, who examines the whole school’s rights respecting work and the impact that has been made through embedding children’s rights into school life based on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child; acknowledges that Garlieston Primary works as a partnership with Whithorn Primary and Nursery while still keeping its own identity, and aims to ensure that every pupil achieves their full potential through providing a challenging, safe and nurturing learning environment where diversity and success are celebrated to guarantee that the children gain the perfect foundations for lifelong learning that will enable them to enrich the community through effort and enterprise, and wishes the pupils and staff continued success as they strive to achieve their full potential both locally and in the wider world.
