Celebrating a Century of St Joseph’s RC Primary School in Bonnybridge
The motion
That the Parliament celebrates the 100th anniversary of St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Primary School in Bonnybridge; notes that the primary school will be hosting a series of events, including a celebratory mass with the whole school community led by Archbishop Cushley, later in March 2025, to highlight the importance of St Joseph’s Primary School in Bonnybridge in the history of Catholic education in Scotland; understands that the story of St Joseph’s begins as far back as 1920 before the school was built, and that it was opened alongside St Joseph’s Church in 1925, led at the time by Bishop Grey Graham and Father Edward Miley, and was part of ensuring that Catholic education in Scotland was further protected when transferring from the Catholic church into the state education system, taking the legal battles from Stirling County Council to the Outer and Inner Houses of the Scottish Court of Session, before finally being successfully heard in the Supreme Court and in the House of Lords; notes that the current St Joseph’s Primary School was completed in 1989 at the opposite end of the site from the old primary school, and, it considers, is the beating heart of its community in Bonnybridge; congratulates the headteacher, Matthew Coulter, his staff team at St Joseph’s, all pupils and parents and the wider school community for their efforts in highlighting the importance of the "St Jo’s Story" online and through engagement in Bonnybridge, and wishes them the very best for this centenary celebration, and for many more anniversaries in the future.
