Purple Day 2025

The motion

That the Parliament recognises that 26 March 2025 marks Epilepsy Awareness Day, which is better known as Purple Day; understands that epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions in the world with more than 58,000 people in Scotland living with the condition; believes that people with epilepsy are more likely to develop mental health conditions, including depression and anxiety, as a result of it; understands that epilepsy is defined as the tendency to have repeated seizures, which start in the brain; recognises that a seizure can be a one-off occurrence triggered by extreme events, such as sustaining a serious head injury; understands that anyone can develop epilepsy at any time in their life, irrespective of their age, gender or background, with every individual’s epilepsy, as well as how they manage it, being different; notes that Epilepsy Scotland takes the opportunity each Purple Day to encourage people to take about epilepsy and dispel the myths and stigmas attached to the condition; recognises that landmarks, including Marischal College and His Majesty’s Theatre, in Aberdeen, will be lit purple to mark the day, and commends the efforts of volunteers at Epilepsy Scotland’s Aberdeen Support Group for their continued efforts in supporting people living with epilepsy across Aberdeen.
