Impact of National Insurance Hikes on Pharmacies

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges the impact that it believes increases to employers’ national insurance contributions will have on pharmacies; understands that the National Pharmacy Association estimates that pharmacies across the UK will be paying an extra £310 million because of the changes in the UK Labour administration’s Budget in autumn 2024; further understands that the majority of independent community pharmacies are small- to medium-sized family businesses; believes that pharmacies are a valuable part of the NHS, providing healthcare services that play a significant role in relieving pressure on GPs and hospitals; condemns the UK Government for, it believes, failing to protect pharmacies from the impacts of national insurance increases, and calls on the Chancellor of the Exchequer to change her mind on this issue before what it believes will be the damaging effects of it are felt by community pharmacies across Scotland and the rest of the UK.
