The Importance of Macduff Harbour
The motion
That the Parliament recognises what it sees as the economic, cultural and social importance of Macduff Harbour to the fishing sector, the shipbuilding industry, where Macduff Shipyards employs over 200 highly skilled workers, the rapidly expanding offshore energy sector, and the local community of Macduff and Banff; considers that, with the significant expansion of offshore wind and the opportunities presented by ScotWind, the north east coast lacks sufficient port capacity, with Fraserburgh, Buckie and Peterhead ports developing ambitious plans to expand and meet increasing demand; expresses concern over Aberdeenshire Council’s reported plans to effectively downgrade Macduff Harbour from a 24-hour, 365-days-a-year port through the removal of the vital and lifesaving nightwatchman role, meaning the port will only be safe to access during office hours, and calls on Aberdeenshire Council to pause this process and engage meaningfully with harbour users, local businesses and the wider community to develop a long-term plan for this vital facility that supports the fishing industry, the harbour users and ensures that the harbour is well positioned to benefit from any offshore renewables revolution in the years ahead.
