Northfield Academy Indoor Climbing Wall Reactivated
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the reactivation of the indoor climbing wall situated at Northfield Academy; understands that the indoor climbing wall was originally installed at the school in 2017, but unfortunately fell out of use due to staff turnover, including the loss of qualified staff to support climbing sessions; notes that, in an attempt to bring the wall back into use, Sport Aberdeen’s Active Schools and Community Sport teams submitted an application for funding from Aberdeen City Health and Social Care Partnership’s Health Improvement Fund, which led to the award of £4,000 to cover the cost of recertifying the wall, in addition to helping to train 32 people to deliver bouldering sessions; understands that, to date, more than 50 young people have taken part in school taster sessions, which have led to the proposed establishment of school lunch club sessions, as well as an all-girls bouldering group; notes that future plans include attracting further support and funding for reactive roped rock climbing, embedding the activities as a regular part of the curricular offering at the school, supporting local clubs to develop performance pathways and enabling other external groups in the community to use the climbing wall outwith school hours; commends the efforts of Sport Aberdeen, Northfield Academy and others involved in the successful reactivation of the wall, and wishes them the best for the future.
