Celebrating the Pioneering Work of Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr Vipin Zamvar

The motion

That the Parliament commends the work of Dr Vipin Zamvar, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh; understands that Dr Zamvar recently appeared on the BBC2 documentary series, Surgeons: At the Edge of Life, which gives viewers an in-depth look at the work carried out by some of the UK's finest and most skilled surgeons; notes that Dr Zamvar was shown performing a rare "off-pump" cardiac procedure on a man with severe coronary disease, using a technique pioneered by himself; understands that Dr Zamvar identified a fold in the pericardium, the sac that surrounds the heart, as an ideal spot to place a deep pericardial retraction suture, now called the Zamvar Pericardial Stitch, allowing surgeons to mobilise the heart in any direction and to access all the different parts of the heart; recognises that the technique has been used by many surgeons all over the world during off-pump surgery; understands that Dr Zamvar has given many lectures worldwide on cardiac and thoracic surgical topics, and is the author of more than 100 papers published in peer-reviewed journals, as well as providing training and mentoring to surgeons in cardiac thoracic surgery, and celebrates what it sees as the exceptional skilled work of Dr Zamvar and the incredible contribution that he makes to Scotland’s NHS and to cardiothoracic medicine.
