Expressing Solidarity with Canada and Condemning US Trade Measures

That the Parliament expresses its solidarity with Canada in response to the imposition by the United States of what it considers are damaging trade measures that could result in a trade war; believes that international trade can benefit all countries involved and tariffs should only be used in exceptional cases, such as the dumping of products on the market below cost; condemns the administration of President Donald Trump for what it sees as its aggressive and protectionist policies; believes that these have harmed international economic stability and key trading partners, such as Canada; acknowledges what it considers are the strong historic, cultural and economic ties between Scotland and Canada; recognises Canada’s commitment to free trade and democratic values; considers that, while international attention is rightly focused on Ukraine and the actions of the United States towards it, the economic pressure placed on Canada by these trade policies also warrants serious concern; believes that these measures have the potential to have indirect consequences for Scotland’s own trade interests, including the whisky industry, and calls on the UK Government to stand in support of Canada and work with international allies to resist protectionism, uphold fair trade, and mitigate what it sees as the harmful impacts of US trade policies.
