Texas's Sharleen Spiteri and BBC Newsreader to Receive Honorary Degrees from University of Glasgow

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Sharleen Spiteri, frontwoman of the iconic Scottish band, Texas, and BBC newsreader, Sally Magnusson, on being awarded honorary degrees from the University of Glasgow; notes that the honorary Doctor of Music will be conferred on Sharleen Spiteri in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the music industry, spanning decades of success both as a performer and songwriter; acknowledges the remarkable career of Sally Magnusson, who will receive an honorary Doctor of Letters for her significant achievements in journalism, broadcasting and literature; notes that these awards will be presented at the university’s Commemoration Day ceremony on 18 June 2025, which celebrates the founding of the university in 1451; commends the University of Glasgow for recognising the accomplishments of individuals who, it believes, have made notable contributions to the arts, humanities, politics and science, and sends its best wishes to all honorary degree recipients and graduating students celebrating this special occasion.
