Celebrating Free Screenings and Anniversary Events at the Glasgow Film Theatre

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT) on its vibrant and inclusive programme for April 2025; celebrates the GFT's commitment to providing free screenings that offer accessible cultural experiences for all, including Steven Spielberg's iconic E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial over the Easter weekend and Jack Black's beloved School of Rock on 12 April, in honour of Record Store Day; recognises the cinema’s 50th anniversary milestone, which was marked with an exciting array of screenings in May, including Singin' in the Rain in 4K, the newly restored 70mm version of North by Northwest, a late night showing of the Coen Brothers’ The Big Lebowski, and a tribute to David Lynch with screenings of Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man in 4K, and The Straight Story on 35mm; acknowledges the rich heritage of the GFT, which was originally known as the Cosmo Cinema, and has been a cornerstone of Glasgow's cultural scene for over eight decades; notes that the Cosmo opened on 18 May 1939 as Scotland's first arts cinema and only the second purpose-built arthouse in Britain, following the Curzon Mayfair in London; commends the GFT for its dedication to enriching Scotland’s cultural landscape and celebrating the magic of cinema, and encourages communities to take advantage of the free film events.
