Free Tree Packs for Schools and Communities
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the news that Woodland Trust Scotland has distributed almost 50,000 trees in 274 tree packs across Scotland under its Free Trees for Schools and Communities Scheme this spring, including deliveries to Ettrick and Yarrow Community Development Company and Eckford Village Hall in the Ettrick, Roxburgh and Berwickshire constituency; notes that nearly 5,000 trees grown in north west Scotland have been sent to Orkney, Shetland and Na h-Eileanan an Iar, and that nearly 8,000 trees went to urban areas with low tree canopy cover and a low tree equity score; further notes that the scheme, which welcomes applications twice a year, offers schools and community groups the chance to acquire native trees to create hedges, copses, and havens for wildlife and people; recognises the many benefits of native woods and trees to Scotland’s people, its biodiversity, and its climate mitigation and adaption; welcomes the news that of all new woodland created in Scotland over the past five years, around half has been native woodland, primarily for nature; commends Woodland Trust Scotland for its Free Trees for Schools and Communities Scheme, and encourages communities and schools across Scotland to register an interest.
