Immersive VR Experience at Glasgow Central Station to Tackle Sexual Harassment on Railways

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges the reported successful implementation of an immersive virtual reality (VR) experience at Glasgow Central Station on 28 March 2025, as part of the ongoing commitment by the rail industry to tackle sexual harassment on the railway network; understands that the immersive VR experience, developed in collaboration with the Rail Delivery Group, British Transport Police and partner organisations, serves to educate and empower passengers to intervene safely and effectively in instances of sexual harassment, providing them with practical advice and techniques to support victims and prevent further escalation of incidents; further understands that the VR experience demonstrates how small, yet impactful actions, such as offering to swap seats with a victim or distracting the perpetrator, can make a significant difference in reducing the harm caused by sexual harassment on public transport; recognises what it sees as the importance of empowering bystanders to take safe action; notes reports of research, commissioned by the rail industry, which shows that a significant number of women (85%) would feel relieved if someone intervened during incidents of sexual harassment; believes that the initiative seeks to equip passengers with the necessary tools to take appropriate action before the involvement of police or rail staff, ensuring a safer environment for all; commends the Rail Delivery Group for its dedication to creating a safer rail environment; encourages continued efforts to expand the VR experience to stations nationwide; considers that this would help to reinforce the message that everyone has the right to feel safe when travelling by train; recognises the ongoing efforts of the British Transport Police in raising awareness of how to report incidents of sexual harassment promptly, via text at 61016, urging passengers to take responsibility in addressing and reporting such unacceptable behaviour, and believes that recognising and supporting initiatives like this can help to further the commitment to creating a society where all individuals can travel without fear of harassment or abuse.
