The Book Nook, Scotland’s Independent Bookshop of the Year for the Second Year in a Row
The motion
That the Parliament commends The Book Nook of Stewarton on being named Scotland’s Independent Bookshop of the Year in the British Book Awards for the second year in a row; understands that the award celebrates bookshops that continue to support local communities with creative, specialist and community-centred activities; believes that The Book Nook embodies these values through its community-based initiatives like Tales for Tinies, a story time and play session for babies and toddlers, Junior Book Nook Club, a rewards-based programme for primary school aged children for reading and reviewing books, the monthly BookNookers Book Club, a friendly and sociable book club where members meet to chat casually about the month’s books, its author events, which provide engagement events for authors and their readers that are free to attend, its Book Nook Book Bank programme, which redistributes second-hand books to recipients in the community who will benefit most from them, and its operation of the Judith Illsley Memorial Fund, which provides books to underprivileged children, children in care and to care experienced young people; recognises the passion of Sarah Skelton, the owner of The Book Nook, for cultivating literacy in her community, especially in young people; praises her approach to ensuring that there is a space for all to share their love of reading or develop their reading skills, and wishes Sarah and her staff all the best in their future endeavours, including their aspirations for the UK Independent Bookshop of the Year title later in 2025.
