Celebration of New Community-led Murals in Glasgow’s Govan Area

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges the recent unveiling of two visually stunning and culturally significant murals in Glasgow’s Govan area, located along key commuter routes near the Clyde Tunnel; recognises the outstanding contributions of the internationally acclaimed artists, Jay Kaes and Gera1, who were selected by a panel of local residents and who worked closely with the Govan and Linthouse communities to develop designs that reflect local identity, heritage and resilience; notes that Jay Kaes’ mural, featuring a forward-facing, red-haired woman layered with digital glitch effects, powerfully weaves together themes of strength, unity and Scottish symbolism, including the national flag, Elder Clan tartan and shipyard structures, while Gera1’s reinterpretation of a 1960 Eric Watt photograph captures a joyful, rebellious spirit with bold colours and a defiant message, celebrating the everyday stories of the local community; recognises that the murals were commissioned by SWG3 in partnership with Linthouse Housing Association and local community groups, and supported by the Glasgow Community and Place Fund and Creative Scotland; acknowledges the ongoing work of the Yardworks GRID project to transform the Glasgow Riverside Innovation District into a globally recognised centre for street art, and commends all those involved for their dedication to public art that is rooted in community voices, cultural pride and creative placemaking.
