Celebrating Glasgow’s 850th Anniversary with a Commemorative Plate

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Make It Glasgow, the not-for-profit social enterprise based at Stockingfield Bridge, on designing and producing a beautiful commemorative plate to mark Glasgow’s 850th anniversary; recognises that the plate weaves together symbols of the city’s rich history, culture and humour, featuring iconic landmarks such as the Finnieston Crane, the Clyde and the Barrowland stars, alongside playful touches, including Billy Connolly’s banana boots and the Duke of Wellington’s traffic cone hat; notes that the plate celebrates Glasgow’s proud ceramics heritage and was inspired by historic works from Bell’s Pottery, while also representing a bold step towards reviving traditional skills and craftsmanship in the north of the city; acknowledges that only 150 plates have been produced and that one is currently on display in the Building Memories exhibition at Kelvin Hall until January 2026, and commends all involved in the creation of this unique and meaningful plate, which captures the spirit, resilience and character of Glasgow and its people.
