International Workers' Memorial Day 2025

The motion

That the Parliament notes that 28 April 2025 is International Workers' Memorial Day; understands that the day is a time to remember those who have died either because of a workplace accident, ill health or diseases as a result of work; further understands that the theme for 2025 is "Occupational health and safety: A fundamental right at work", highlighting in particular the advantages and disadvantages of Artificial Intelligence within the work place; notes that the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) annual statistics for the UK show that 138 workers were killed in work-related accidents in 2023-24, and that a further estimated 13,000 deaths occur each year from occupational lung disease and cancer caused by past exposure at work to chemicals, and considers that health and safety representatives play a vital role in keeping workplaces safe and healthy by working with employers and raising members’ concerns about working conditions, as well as undertaking inspections of workplaces to check that all steps are being taken to keep workers safe.
