Coeliac Awareness Month 2025

The motion

That the Parliament notes that May is Coeliac Awareness Month, an annual opportunity to raise awareness of coeliac disease, a serious autoimmune condition affecting at least one in 100 people in Scotland; welcomes the work of Coeliac UK and NHS Scotland to improve diagnosis rates and support people living with the condition, including through the provision of gluten-free food on prescription for those who need it; understands that despite improvements in recent years, two thirds of those with the condition remain undiagnosed leaving around 32,000 people in Scotland potentially at risk of long-term health complications; encourages those experiencing any of these symptoms, including but not limited to extreme fatigue, anaemia, neurological issues, nausea and stomach pain, to visit isitcoeliacdisease.org.uk to take a self assessment, and calls on the Scottish Government to urge full adoption of the coeliac clinical pathway by NHS boards across Scotland in order to improve diagnosis and ongoing management of the condition.
