Celebrating Brisbane's 200th Anniversary

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the city of Brisbane on its 200th anniversary; acknowledges Brisbane as the capital and largest city of the state of Queensland, Australia, and the third most populous city in the country, with a population of approximately 2.8 million; notes that the Moreton Bay penal settlement was founded in 1824 at Redcliffe and moved to North Quay, on the banks of the Brisbane River, in May 1825; understands that it was named after Sir Thomas MakDougall Brisbane, the governor of New South Wales, who was born in Largs; recognises that Brisbane was designated as Queensland's capital in 1859, upon the state's split from New South Wales; appreciates Brisbane's historical significance during the Second World War, as the base for the allied command in the south west Pacific and the headquarters for General Douglas MacArthur of the United States Army; celebrates Brisbane's status as one of Australia's most popular tourist destinations, its recognition as the country's most biodiverse and greenest city, and its frequent high rankings in lists of the most liveable cities, and commends Brisbane for hosting major events such as the 1982 Commonwealth Games, World Expo 88, the 2014 G20 summit, and its upcoming role as host of the 2032 Summer Olympics.
