North Sea Job Losses

That the Parliament calls on the Prime Minister and the UK Government to act now to prevent more job losses in Aberdeen and the North Sea oil and gas sector; considers that Harbour Energy, which recently announced 250 job losses, is just the latest North Sea operator to reportedly cite the Energy Profits Levy, which was raised and extended in the first Labour administration's budget in 2024, and the wider regulatory environment as major determining factors in cutting jobs in their North Sea operations; understands that Unite the Union reports that 2,500 jobs have been lost in the North Sea sector since April 2024 alone; notes that Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce has warned of the grave risk of losing the world-class company and skills base that will be required to deliver the offshore wind, green hydrogen and carbon capture projects required for the transition away from fossil fuels, and that a premature end to the North Sea oil and gas sector before renewables are at scale to replace those jobs will result in the UK relying more on carbon-intensive hydrocarbon imports; believes that without action from the UK Government to address concerns over the Energy Profits Levy and other aspects of the North Sea regulatory framework, Aberdeen is at risk of the same fate that befell the many former mining towns across Scotland that it considers were abandoned by the Thatcher administration, and reiterates the calls for the Prime Minister and his Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero to visit Aberdeen and engage meaningfully with industry leaders to find a solution that saves the thousands of jobs that it considers are being put at risk.
