Welcoming the Permanent End of Peak Fares on Trains
The motion
That the Parliament recognises the work of ASLEF, other rail trade unions and campaigners across the country in campaigning for the permanent end of peak fares on trains; believes that the Scottish Government's decision to permanently end peak fares on trains is welcome and that it will hugely benefit workers and commuters who need to travel at peak times; understands that ending peak fares was one of the central recommendations in the rail unions' report, A Vision for Scotland’s Railways; pays tribute to what it sees as the subsequent relentless campaigning on this issue by ASLEF, the train drivers union, which, it believes, has consistently argued that the removal of peak fares will help to make trains more affordable and incentivise a modal shift from road to rail travel, and that this will help Scotland reduce CO2 emissions and meet its climate targets, and acknowledges the work of ASLEF and other trade unions, which, it believes, shows the value of trade unions working both for their members and wider societal and environmental benefits.
