International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT)
The motion
That the Parliament marks the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) on 17 May 2025; understands that IDAHOBIT aims to raise awareness of violence and discrimination against LGBTQ+ people; believes that it acts as a reminder that there is still a long way to go until all LGBTQ+ people are free and safe from harm; considers that action must be taken to tackle the reported high rates of hate crimes against LGBTQ+ people in Scotland; notes that there were 1,818 charges reported with an aggravation of prejudice relating to sexual orientation in 2023-24 and 84 charges reported with an aggravation of prejudice relating to transgender identity in the same period; recognises the work of grassroots organisations, charities and businesses to provide safe spaces for LGBTQ+ people, run Pride events and advocate for the rights of LGBTQ+ people; notes reports of the regression of rights and protections facing LGBTQ+ people globally; considers that there is a need for a progressive approach to policy that ensures that LGBTQ+ people are afforded the same rights as the general population; believes that there are currently high levels of fear within the LGBTQ+ community, and encourages all MSPs to engage positively with the LGBTQ+ community and to take action to ensure that their voices are heard.
