Glasgow Organist's Tribute to City's 850th Anniversary

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Bill Hutcheson on marking over 55 years of outstanding service as an organist at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, where he has become a much-loved and familiar figure for generations of visitors; acknowledges the significance of his special recital on 14 May 2025, delivered as part of the Glasgow 850 celebrations, which mark the 850th anniversary of the city, and coincides exactly with his performance on the same date, in 1975, for the Glasgow 800 celebrations; recognises what it sees as Bill Hutcheson’s extraordinary contribution to Scotland’s cultural life, his role in maintaining the tradition of what it understands is the world’s longest-running free daily organ recital, and his ability to engage diverse audiences with music, ranging from classical pieces to contemporary and popular tunes; believes that Mr Hutcheson's passion for music was nurtured from a young age, and that his long-standing commitment to public performance has enriched the lives of countless Glaswegians and visitors alike, and considers that such tributes reflect the enduring importance of community, culture and creativity in celebrating Glasgow’s rich musical heritage during this milestone anniversary year.
