The motion

That the Parliament marks World No Tobacco Day, which was established by the World Health Organization (WHO) and takes place on 31 May 2025; commends the health charities, ASH Scotland and Asthma + Lung UK Scotland, for raising awareness about the "Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products" theme for this year’s campaign, and for working to amplify the voices of young people across Scotland who are speaking out to stop what it considers predatory industry marketing tactics, such as using sweet and fruit flavours, sleek designs, attractive packaging and digital media campaigns to glamorise addictive and health harming nicotine products; expresses concern that, since 21,559 S2 and S4 pupils answered questions about smoking and vaping in the Scottish School Adolescent Lifestyle and Substance Use Survey (SALSUS) in 2018, and 25,411 S2 and S4 pupils replied regarding use of tobacco and e-cigarettes in the Health and Wellbeing Census of 2021-22, there has been no further robust national data to track and identify emerging trends in children’s use of tobacco, vapes or nicotine pouches, and looks forward to hearing the views of young people about what it sees as disreputable industry tactics geared towards maintaining substantial profits at the cost of the current and next generation’s health on World No Tobacco Day.
