Ardrossan’s Billy Gilmour Makes Scottish Football History in Italy

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Billy Gilmour and Scott McTominay on becoming the first Scottish players to win the Serie A title; notes that the Ardrossan-born Gilmour and compatriot McTominay played key roles, throughout the season, not least in SSC Napoli’s 2-0 victory over Cagliari on 23 May 2025, which secured the club’s fourth league title in its 99-year history; understands that McTominay, subsequently voted the most valuable player in Italy, opened the scoring with an acrobatic finish before Romelu Lukaku sealed the win, and that Gilmour started the match and contributed to a composed midfield performance; acknowledges that the pair join Jack Diment and James Squair, of the 1905 Juventus team, as the only Scots to have won a top-flight Italian league title; notes that their success follows Lewis Ferguson’s Coppa Italia win with Bologna earlier in the month, marking a historic season for Scottish footballers in Italy; recognises the celebrations that followed in Naples, including a victory parade attended by an estimated 200,000 fans and a congratulatory audience with His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, and considers that this achievement will inspire young footballers across Scotland and beyond.
