Addressing First Aid Training Gaps in Glasgow through the Taking the Fear Out of First Aid Campaign

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges the reported results of a YouGov survey commissioned by St Andrew’s First Aid (SAFA), Scotland’s only dedicated first aid charity, which states that Glasgow has the highest proportion of adults in Scotland (57%) who have never received any formal first aid training, despite, it understands, 89% of respondents recognising the importance of having such training; notes reports that the same survey shows that Glasgow residents are the most likely in Scotland to confidently step into a first aid emergency, with 16% of respondents reporting that they would act without hesitation, compared to the national average of 12%; further notes, however, that fear remains a significant barrier to action, with 58% of respondents in Glasgow citing a fear of doing something wrong and 55% of respondents fearing that they could make the situation worse; recognises with concern that 23% of respondents to the survey, the highest proportion in Scotland, reportedly expressed discomfort with touching someone or crossing personal boundaries in an emergency situation, and supports SAFA’s Taking the Fear Out of First Aid campaign, which aims to raise awareness, address these fears, increase public confidence and ensure that more Glaswegians are trained and empowered to help save lives.
