Mary Barbour Mural, Govan

The motion

That the Parliament celebrates the unveiling of a new mural at 1198 Govan Road commemorating the life and accomplishments of Mary Barbour, one of Glasgow's most iconic campaigners; understands that the mural was designed by acclaimed artist Jeks, and commissioned by SWG3’s Yardworks GRID, in partnership with Linthouse Housing Association, to mark their 50th anniversary, and Glasgow’s 850th anniversary celebrations; acknowledges the historic housing association link as Barbour, along with several women including Mary Laird, Helen Crawfurd, Mary Jeff, Jessie Stephen, and Jessie Fergusson, established the Glasgow Women's Housing Association in 1914, which, in turn, was instrumental in first getting the Rent Act of 1915 passed and later assisted the improvement of the post-war Housing and Town Planning Act 1919 for municipal social housing; notes that Barbour was also Glasgow’s first female Baillie and first woman magistrate; further notes that, in addition to the rent strikes, she was also responsible for campaigns for free school milk, municipal wash-houses, and Glasgow’s first family planning clinic; welcomes the addition of this beautiful work of art to the constituency, and hopes that it will serve as an ongoing reminder to everyone of the invaluable work of Barbour and her contemporaries.
