Mick McGahey and the 1984-85 Miners' Strike
The motion
That the Parliament recognises the recent parliament exhibition commemorating the life and legacy of Mick McGahey; believes that Mick was a towering figure in the labour movement, who dedicated his life to fighting for the rights of working people as a miner, trade unionist, and committed communist; understands that by the 1960s, he was a leading advocate for a Scottish Parliament; acknowledges his leadership and what it sees as his unwavering commitment to justice, particularly during the 1984-85 miners’ strike; notes the recent visit to the Scottish Parliament by former miners, Willie Doolan and Charlie Morrison, who, along with many others, were participants in what it considers is a defining chapter of working-class history; recognises the powerful personal recollections of Willie Doolan about his arrest during the strike and the impact that it had on him as a young man, and considers that the oral testimony of men, like Willie Doolan, recounted in Scottish schools, would be invaluable to generations of children, learning about Scotland's recent past.
