Commemorating the 250th Anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill

The motion

That the Parliament recognises that 17 June 2025 marks the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill, the first major battle of the American Revolutionary War, which took place in 1775 in Charlestown, now part of Boston, Massachusetts; understands that, although the British forces ultimately claimed a tactical victory, the battle came at a high cost and served as a powerful symbol of resistance and determination for the American colonial forces; acknowledges the strategic significance of the battle, which, it believes, demonstrated the capability of militia forces to stand against a professional army and influenced British military planning thereafter; remembers the casualties lost on both sides,1,054 British troops and 450 for the colonial forces, including American patriot General Joseph Warren, and reflects on what it sees as the enduring historical importance of the battle in shaping the course of the American Revolution, and its legacy in the broader context of struggles for self-determination and democratic governance.
