140th Anniversary of Coatbridge Attaining Burgh Status

The motion

That the Parliament celebrates the 140th anniversary of Coatbridge attaining burgh status on 25 June 1885; recognises Coatbridge as one of the driving forces of Scotland’s industrial revolution; acknowledges what it sees as Coatbridge’s pivotal role in iron and coal production during the 19th and early 20th centuries, when it was known as “the Iron Burgh”, and supplied vital materials for Scotland’s railways, shipbuilding, and global exports; acknowledges the proud, working-class heritage of the town and the enduring community spirit that it understands has defined Coatbridge for generations; celebrates the town’s cultural identity, shaped by what it sees as its strong Irish-Scottish connections, community institutions, and working-class traditions; praises the fact that while Coatbridge remembers its rich history, Coatbridge has today evolved to be a welcoming vibrant multicultural urban community; notes that this anniversary offers an opportunity to reflect not only on the town’s remarkable past, but also on its potential for a lively future at the heart of North Lanarkshire and the wider Scottish economy, and celebrates the people of Coatbridge for their enduring pride, warmth, and contribution to the wider story of Scotland.
