Celebrating the Work of Disco Buddies and the Legacy of Community Spirit in Coatbridge

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Disco Buddies, a grassroots community initiative based at the Cliftonville community group centre in Coatbridge, on its ongoing success in bringing joy, music and social connection to adults with additional support needs across Lanarkshire; recognises that the group was founded in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown by the friends, Ann Gray and Bill McKinley, inspired by Ann’s sister, Lynda, and her partner, Tommy, both of whom loved music and dancing; notes that the project began as a way to safely encourage social interaction during a time of isolation, and has since grown into a vibrant and transformative community, regularly attracting hundreds of participants; commends the work of Bill, whose professional experience in supported living and dedication to the wellbeing of others has been key to the group’s success, alongside co-founder Ann and her husband, Les; acknowledges the powerful tribute that the group paid to Lynda, who sadly passed away in January 2025, by continuing the events that she inspired; recognises the volunteers, many of whom are in their 60s, for sustaining this project with dedication and warmth, and notes the group’s aspirations to gain regular funding and charitable status to ensure the long-term future of Disco Buddies for generations to come.
