Wampis Nation Representatives Visit to Scotland

That the Parliament welcomes the recent visit to Scotland by representatives of the Autonomous Territorial Government of the Wampis Nation in Peru; notes the publication of a position paper on protecting and realising the human rights of indigenous peoples, Afro-descendant peoples and other communities in the context of business and human rights; understands that this paper makes a variety of recommendations to the UK Government; notes that it outlines some of the shared experiences of the types of human rights and environmental harms that are commonly linked to business activities; believes that it also sets out some of the UK’s international human rights law obligations and arguments for a UK corporate accountability law; notes that it suggests a need for increased direct funding as an essential form of support that the UK Government can provide to indigenous peoples, Afro-descendant peoples and other communities; recognises that it makes recommendations for the UK Government, which are aimed at ensuring a holistic, human rights-based approach across UK diplomacy, policies, laws, strategies and official development assistance, and welcomes the paper’s contribution to discussions on enhancing human rights protection for indigenous peoples, Afro-descendant peoples and other communities, including representatives from the Wampis Nation, the region of Maria la Baja and Indigenous Resguardo Canamomo y Lomaprieta in Colombia, and Liberia and Indonesia, who contributed to its development.
