Glasgow’s New Peace Garden: A Living Symbol of Resilience and Remembrance

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates all those involved in the creation of the new Peace Garden at the Botanic Gardens in Glasgow; notes that the garden opened on 6 August 2025 to mark the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and to commemorate Victory over Japan (VJ) Day and the end of the Second World War; recognises what it considers to be the powerful symbolism of planting seeds from ginkgo trees that survived the atomic bombing, as part of the global Mayors for Peace initiative; commends the thoughtful and creative contributions of pupils from St Charles and North Kelvinside primary schools, who helped to design elements of the garden and produced artwork and essays reflecting on the themes of peace, remembrance and resilience, many of which were featured in a digital exhibition to mark the launch; celebrates the work of the Botanic Gardens’ curator Hiro Shimai, whose personal and professional connections to Hiroshima add further poignancy to the project, and welcomes what it sees as an important addition to Glasgow’s cultural and educational landscape, which serves as a living tribute to the survivors of war and a reminder of the enduring hope for a more peaceful future.
