Supporting Young Creatives from Disadvantaged Areas

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the University of Glasgow, its partners, and the young participants of the Create, Make and Innovate Filmmaking Summer School on successfully delivering a programme that provided young people from disadvantaged areas, such as Castlemilk, Drumchapel, Easterhouse and Govan, with valuable skills in creative arts and filmmaking; notes that approximately 20 young participants gained hands-on experience in camera operation, filming, editing, graffiti painting, sound, special effects, and creative entrepreneurship, while also being introduced to university life and career opportunities in the creative industries; recognises what it sees as the important role played by the University of Glasgow’s School of Culture and Creative Arts, alongside partners including GMAC, SWG3, Community Transport Glasgow, Music Broth, and The Clutha Trust, in providing an inclusive, supportive, and innovative learning environment; understands the significance of such programmes in breaking down barriers to participation in the creative industries and building confidence and ambition among young people who may face social or economic disadvantages; acknowledges the critical funding support from the university’s Innovation Cluster Development Fund, the Scottish Funding Council’s University Innovation Fund, and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, which enabled the pilot project to explore sustainable community engagement through creative education, and notes what it sees as the positive impact that creative arts education and entrepreneurship programmes have on social inclusion, community development, and long-term economic regeneration.
