Maggie's Centre Announcement for Dumfries

The motion

That the Parliament warmly welcomes the announcement that plans to establish a Maggie’s Centre at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary have been given the green light; recognises what it sees as the significance of this development for the 1,200 people diagnosed with cancer annually across Dumfries and Galloway in an area that includes rural living; understands that the centre will offer support sessions by specialists, psychologists and benefits advisors; celebrates the collaborative efforts of NHS Dumfries and Galloway and the Maggie’s charity, under the leadership of Dame Laura Lee DBE, in bringing this long-awaited project to fruition; acknowledges the deep local resonance of this centre being built in Dumfries, the hometown of Maggie Keswick Jencks, the visionary founder of Maggie’s, who was born near Dumfries at Holywood in Dumfriesshire, and commends all those involved for honouring Maggie’s legacy by ensuring that people affected by cancer in this rural region will have additional compassionate, expert support close to home.
