University of Glasgow Clinical Academic Nurse Wins Inspiring Excellence Nursing Innovation and Research Award

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Kath Williamson, nurse and researcher, upon winning the Inspiring Excellence – Nursing Innovation and Research Award at the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Scotland Nurse of the Year Awards; understands that the awards, which were held in June at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, celebrate the outstanding achievements of nursing and midwifery staff across multiple categories and that this specific award recognises those who have influenced change with a measurable impact on outcomes and experience; notes that Kath was nominated for her dedication to improving care for people living with severe obesity; understands that while working as a district nurse, she identified a critical gap in services for housebound patients and went on to pursue a PhD at the University of Glasgow to explore the needs, experiences, and costs associated with this group; further understands that her research has highlighted the fragmented care, stigma, and unmet needs faced by housebound patients with severe obesity; recognises that Kath used an innovative mixed-methods study, analysing care costs and identifying gaps in weight management services; commends Kath for remaining committed to leading research, mentoring others, and advocating for nurses in research role despite, it believes, there being limited career pathways for clinical academic nurses in Scotland, and wishes her continued success for the future.
