Practical Concerns Regarding Co-location of Carbon Capture and Storage Sites

That the Parliament understands that the co-location of offshore renewable energy developments and subsurface carbon capture and storage sites requires spatial overlap, with multiple private companies and developers working in and exploiting the same marine environment, subsurface, water column, surface water, and airspace; notes reported concerns regarding the spatial overlap between the MarramWind Offshore Wind Farm and the Acorn Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Project, notably, barriers to seismic acquisition, including measuring, monitoring, and verification, and concerns regarding a potential third project that overlaps both developments; disagrees with the assessment by the First Minister, as stated in the Chamber on 19 June 2025, that "I do not think that there is any incompatibility between the approaches that have been taken"; pays tribute to the ongoing research on the issue of marine geospatial overlap by the University of Aberdeen’s School of Geosciences through the Centre for Energy Transition, and calls on the Scottish Government to further engage with experts, industry, workers, trade unions, and constituents in the North East Scotland region on the suitability of CCS sites in Scotland.
