The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Rebecca Young, a pupil at Kelvinside Academy in Glasgow, on being named among Time magazine’s Girls of the Year 2025; notes that Rebecca, aged 12 at the time, designed a solar-powered blanket to help homeless people keep warm; recognises that her idea was developed into a working prototype by engineering company, Thales, with 35 units distributed to Homeless Project Scotland; acknowledges that this achievement came after Rebecca’s entry topped the UK Primary Engineer competition, which received more than 70,000 submissions; understands that Time’s awards, run in partnership with LEGO, have seen Rebecca honoured globally as an innovator and role model, including being depicted as a LEGO mini-figure, and commends Rebecca for her creativity, compassion and commitment to addressing social challenges, while inspiring other young people, particularly girls, to pursue opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
