75th Anniversary of St Monica’s RC Parish in Coatbridge
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates St Monica’s Roman Catholic Parish in Coatbridge on the occasion of its 75th anniversary, marking 75 years since its establishment on 8 September 1950 to meet the spiritual and social needs of a growing post-war community in Old Monkland; notes that the parish's first mass was celebrated in a barn on 30 May 1953; further notes that, through the dedication and generosity of the community, £30,000 was raised to support the construction of the church, which was officially opened by Bishop James Scanlon in 1956, with the foundation stone laid in 1957; recognises what it sees as the parish’s longstanding commitment to inclusion and service through organisations such as the Union of Catholic Mothers, which was founded in 1958, the Society of St Vincent de Paul, and a wide range of parish events, which culminated in a civic reception in 2008 to honour its contributions; believes that St Monica’s Parish remains a place of great social cohesion and community spirit, and provides a focal point for worship, outreach, and togetherness in the heart of Coatbridge; commends its contribution to the Catholic life of the town, its support for faith renewal, and its preparations for rededication in partnership with the Redemptorist Fathers, and wishes the parish continued success in its mission to inspire worship, deepen spirituality and nurture community hope for generations to come.
