International Day of Democracy 2025
The motion
That the Parliament notes that 15 September 2025 marks the International Day of Democracy; understands that this is an occasion established by the UN to promote and strengthen democracy worldwide; acknowledges what it considers is the importance of democratic principles, such as political participation, human rights and the rule of law, in ensuring the freedom and dignity of individuals; recognises what it sees are the challenges facing democracies globally, including threats to political freedoms, voter access and public trust, and welcomes the commitment to supporting and safeguarding democracy in Scotland, while encouraging global efforts to promote democratic governance and human rights for all.
