Lodged by Maggie Chapman (Scottish Green Party) Standard Motion 22 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament believes that people seeking asylum deserve warm, safe accommodation; understands that protests against the housing of asylum seekers in hotels and similar locations have taken place in Aberdeen, Westhill, Perth, Peterhead and Falkirk, with further protests planned in the coming weeks according to media reports; notes with deep regret that these protests have reportedly been experienced by residents as stressful, distressing and dangerous; further notes reports that racist groups are using these protests to spread hatred and misinformation about people seeking asylum, who are fleeing war and persecution, and believes that this is unacceptable; believes that asylum seekers and refugees should be able to live in safety, peace and comfort in Scotland’s communities, and that there is a moral and legal obligation to provide sanctuary and refugee, and notes calls on the Scottish Government and Police Scotland to outline what they are doing to ensure the safety of residents, and those protesting their right to safe accommodation, and to ensure order in and around hotels and other facilities where they are living.
