Recognition of Professor Gillian Wright’s Pioneering Space Science Career

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Professor Gillian Wright, originally from Aberlady, on being awarded the 2024 Baird of Bute Innovation Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to space science and international collaboration; notes that Professor Wright has played a leading role in infrared astronomy, including serving as the European principal investigator for the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) aboard the James Webb Space Telescope; acknowledges her leadership at the UK Astronomy Technology Centre, where she has helped drive major international projects such as the SKA Observatory and the Extremely Large Telescope; notes that the Baird of Bute Innovation Award commemorates Andrew Blain Baird, a pioneering Scottish aviator, and celebrates Scots who have made significant advancements in science, technology and entrepreneurship; commends Professor Wright for what it sees as her inspirational career and her commitment to pushing the boundaries of scientific discovery, and wishes her continued success in her future endeavours.
