UNISON Delegation from Scotland to Visit Ukraine in Solidarity with the People of Kharkiv

The motion

That the Parliament recognises and commends the upcoming visit of a Scottish UNISON delegation to Ukraine, comprising  of William Shearer, the Chair of North Lanarkshire Branch, Tracy Anne Miller, the Lothian Health Branch Secretary, Carolyn Casey, of Lothian Health Branch and Stephen Smellie ,of South Lanarkshire Branch; believes that this will be the first trade union delegation to travel to Ukraine since the Russian invasion in 2022, and that it is being supported by unions in the STUC, the Ukrainian Consul to Scotland and the Ukrainian Solidarity Campaign; understands that the delegation will visit the city of Kharkiv, where they will deliver substantial financial support to community and trade union projects; notes that the itinerary will include visits to hospitals, schools and other community-led initiatives; further notes that the delegation will then travel to Kyiv to attend a trade union conference and continue strengthening links between workers in Scotland and Ukraine; welcomes the efforts made to raise funds through Crowdfunder and trade union networks, with over £10,000 already raised, and commends all involved for their commitment to international solidarity and providing direct, practical support to the people of Ukraine; affirms what it believes is Scotland’s continuing support for the people of Ukraine and their struggle for peace, sovereignty and justice, and wishes William, Tracey Anne, Carolyn and Stephen a safe journey.
