Teenagers with IBD
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the news that Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital is improving the lives of teenagers with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with a new home-based approach to treatment; notes that this approach, which is a nurse-led initiative, sees patients self-administering medication at home on a fortnightly basis rather than having to attend hospital, as an outpatient, every six weeks; understands that, after receiving their first injection in a hospital setting along with initial training, this process is supported by community nurses, who continue the training until the patient is confident in self-administration, along with ongoing monitoring; believes that this process is less intrusive to patients, giving more control and reducing the emotional and physical toll of repeated hospital visits; congratulates clinical nurse specialist Chantelle Stewart, who spearheaded this initiative, and looks forward to this treatment being rolled-out fully to all eligible teens as they reach the appropriate age and clinical criteria.
