Welcoming Maggie's Centre Planned for Dumfries

Lodged by Craig Hoy (Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party) Standard Motion 28 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the announcement that Maggie’s has been given the go-ahead to plan a new Maggie’s Centre in the grounds of Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary; believes that this will bring expert practical, emotional and financial support closer to people across Dumfries and Galloway who are living with cancer, as well as their families and friends; understands that the region sees around 1,200 new cancer diagnoses each year and that, due to the rural nature of the area, many residents currently travel long distances to access Maggie’s centres in Glasgow and Edinburgh; remembers Maggie Keswick Jencks, whose vision was to provide welcoming spaces near hospitals to help people live well with cancer, and wishes all involved well as they work to deliver what it sees as this much-needed support for the south west region.
