Heriot-Watt University Shortlisted for University of the Year 2025

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes that Heriot-Watt University has been shortlisted for University of the Year 2025 in the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Awards; acknowledges that the awards celebrate excellence across 20 categories and attract over 500 entries from universities across the UK and Ireland; recognises that Heriot-Watt University’s submission focuses on the university’s sustainability leadership and the purpose of providing transformative education to those who might not otherwise access it, and delivering employability for all; highlights that Heriot-Watt University is the only Scottish university to make the shortlist this year; further highlights the university’s success in the latest Guardian University Guide 2026, with Heriot-Watt University’s performance ranked 31st in the UK and seventh in Scotland, up from 66th and eighth, respectively, the year before; understands that the university’s showing was underpinned by outstanding subject-level performances, with four top-10 UK rankings for Chemical Engineering, Economics, Chemistry, and Mechanical Engineering; believes that the recent successes are a recognition of the talent, ambition and commitment of Heriot-Watt University’s students and staff, and wishes the university continued success.
