Breakthrough in Huntington’s Disease Treatment

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the announcement of a major breakthrough in the treatment of Huntington’s disease following positive three-year clinical trial results for the gene therapy AMT-130; understands that the trial, which was led by Professor Sarah Tabrizi and colleagues at University College London, demonstrated a 75% slowing of disease progression in patients; considers Huntington’s disease one of the cruellest inherited neurodegenerative conditions, often emerging in adulthood and causing immense distress to families, including in many communities across Scotland; understand that prevalence is particularly high in northern Scotland at 14.5 per 100,000 people; pays tribute to the courage of patients and families who participated in this world-first trial, as well as the dedication of UK-based researchers and clinicians whose pioneering work has, it believes, delivered new hope; acknowledges the potential of this therapy to extend the quality of life of people with the condition for decades and to pave the way for future preventative treatments for gene carriers before symptoms emerge; notes concerns about the complexity and cost of the treatment, but believes that no family affected by Huntington’s should be left behind, and calls on the Scottish Government, in partnership with the UK Government, NHS Scotland, and relevant regulatory authorities, to work proactively to accelerate access to what it sees as this life-changing therapy, to support ongoing research collaborations, and to ensure fair and consistent access to specialist services for Huntington’s patients across Scotland.
