Dame Judith Hackitt Accepts Honorary Fellowship from the Association for Project Safety

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Dame Judith Hackitt on being awarded an Honorary Fellowship from the Association for Project Safety (APS) in recognition of her outstanding contribution to health and safety in the design and construction sector; notes that Dame Judith, who is a chemical engineer by training, spent the first half of her career working in the chemical industry, both in manufacturing and as an advocate for the industry, making her what it sees as a role model, particularly for young women wanting to enter the profession, at national and international level; understands that from 2007 to 2016, Dame Judith was Chair of the UK’s Health and Safety Executive and that in 2017 she conducted an independent review for the UK Government into building regulations and fire safety in the wake of the Grenfell Tower disaster; further understands that since publishing her final report in 2018, she has continued to press for change and her recommendations for radical reform of the regulatory system received royal assent in the Building Safety Act 2022, which, it believes, was described as the biggest overhaul in construction regulation in a generation; believes that APS has been a driving force in improving health and safety standards within the construction industry since it was founded in 1995, and wishes Dame Judith and APS continued success in their venture to drive safer and healthier outcomes for all involved across the sector.
