Condemning STV Cuts

Lodged by Kevin Stewart Standard Motion 29 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament condemns reports that STV is to cut 60 jobs and shut down its north of Scotland television news programme; believes that STV North, which is based in Aberdeen, is vital for ensuring quality regional coverage of news and current affairs outwith the Central Belt; fears that changing to a single news service, based in Glasgow, will lead to what it believes would be a further homogenisation of voices in Scotland, with viewers in areas like the north east, Highlands and Tayside only able to have their stories told through a Central Belt lens, and calls on decision-makers at STV to have a complete rethink, retain a separate news service in the north and ensure that the legacy of regional news, which stretches back to the days of Grampian Television, is not diminished.
