Challenge Poverty Week 2025

The motion

That the Parliament recognises Challenge Poverty Week 2025, which is coordinated by the Poverty Alliance, Scotland’s anti-poverty network, and runs from 6 to 12 October; notes that activities, events and actions will take place across Scotland to highlight the realities of, and solutions to, poverty; notes that over 450 organisations took part in the Challenge Poverty Week 2024; believes that poverty levels in Scotland are indefensibly high with 20% of people, and 22% of children, living in relative poverty; notes that communities and organisations across Scotland are demanding better on a number of key policy areas to move the dial on poverty, including social security, jobs, public services, fair funding for the third sector and the climate; considers that people in Scotland believe in justice and compassion and are asking for these policy areas to be a priority for parties in the Scottish Parliament election in 2026; further considers that it has a shared responsibility to tackle poverty and create a more just Scotland where everyone has the necessary income to live in dignity; expresses concern that particular groups of people, including women, lone parents, disabled people and people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds, are disproportionately experiencing poverty, and encourages MSPs to support events and activities in their own constituencies as part of this important campaign.
